The word on the label won't stop the sneezing. Here's what makes a dog bed genuinely hypoallergenic - for allergic dogs and allergic humans.
If someone in your house sneezes, itches, or wheezes around the dog, the dog bed is probably making it worse — and the word "hypoallergenic" on a label won't save you by itself. Here's what actually matters.
The bed is an allergen warehouse
Allergies to "dogs" are usually allergies to dander, saliva proteins, and the dust mites that feed on both. And where does all of that concentrate? The one object your dog rubs against for 12+ hours a day.
A fabric dog bed collects dander in its fibers and moisture in its foam — the perfect dust mite habitat. Washing helps for a day or two, but the foam core can't be washed, so the reservoir refills constantly.
What "hypoallergenic" should actually mean
1. Surfaces allergens can't colonize. The gold standard is a smooth, wipe-clean, non-porous shell. Dander sits on top where a wipe removes it completely — instead of embedding in fabric where a wash removes some of it, sometimes.
2. A sealed core. Dust mites need moisture and food inside the material. A foam core sealed behind a waterproof barrier gives them neither. No habitat, no colony, no allergen factory.
3. Fresh soft layers, not laundered ones. Anything soft will eventually hold dander. The question is whether you can actually reset it. A replaceable top layer takes the allergen load back to zero in seconds — a washed cover just takes it down a notch.
Signs your current bed is the problem
Allergy symptoms that are worse in the room where the dog sleeps. A dog who scratches more after lying on the bed (dogs get dust mite allergies too — it's one of the most common canine allergies). A smell that returns days after washing — that's microbial activity, and it travels with allergens.
How we designed for allergy households
The Birchwood Bed pairs a sealed memory foam core with a wipe-clean, medical-grade composite leather shell — hypoallergenic by construction, not by label. Dander wipes off completely. The core stays dry and sealed, so dust mites never move in. Veterinarians recommend this design for allergy-prone dogs and the humans who love them.
The soft layer is our compostable Eco-Cover: when it's absorbed its share of dander and fur, you swap it for a fresh one and compost the old — a true allergen reset, no washing machine required.
