40 hours a year washing dog bedding, or 10-second swaps that compost in 45 days. The honest comparison between washable and compostable.
Every dog owner accepts the same deal without questioning it: the bed gets dirty, so you wash it. Forever. What if the deal itself is the problem?
There's a different model — swap and compost instead of wash and repeat — and once you run the numbers, it's not even close.
The true cost of "washable"
A washable dog bed cover costs you every single week: the wrestling match to get it off, a machine cycle (fur included — your repair tech says hello), drying time, and the wrestling match to get it back on. Call it 45 minutes a week. That's close to 40 hours a year — a full work week — spent laundering one object. And the reward? A cover that comes out a little more worn, a little less fitted, holding a little more of what never quite washes out.
There's an environmental cost too: hot water, detergent, microfiber shedding into the water supply, and a cover that eventually lands in a landfill anyway — it just makes hundreds of washing-machine stops first.
The compostable model
Our Eco-Covers flip the deal. The cover's job is to catch fur, dander, and everyday mess so the bed never sees it. When a cover has done its job, you don't wash it. You pull it off, drop it in your compost or green bin, and slide on a fresh one. Ten seconds. The old cover biodegrades in about 45 days — roughly the time it takes a washable cover to go through six more wash cycles.
"But isn't disposable wasteful?"
It's the right question, and it's why the material matters. A compostable cover returns to soil. A "durable" polyester cover is a petroleum product that will outlive your dog, your washing machine, and you — no amount of washing changes where it ends up. When the alternative is hundreds of hot-water cycles followed by a landfill anyway, a cover that composts in 45 days is the lower-impact path, not the guilty one.
The part that makes it work: the bed underneath
Swap-and-compost only makes sense if the bed itself never needs washing. That's the other half of the system: the Birchwood Bed's wipe-clean, waterproof shell means the covers handle the everyday, and anything bigger is a 30-second wipe. Between the two, the washing machine is simply out of the picture.
One more honest tip from experience: our darker covers last about three times longer than the light colors — which is why we let you try a dark one free with any light 2-pack.
